In-person at the Hiawatha Public Library

Eye-Opening Update on Human Trafficking in Iowa

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Did you know -- the majority of those victimized by human trafficking victims never get out? And that human trafficking is happening all around us, even in Iowa?

Please join League of Women Voters at the Hiawatha Library to hear from Chains Interrupted, a local non-profit dedicated to the prevention of human trafficking through awareness, prevention and advocacy.

Marilyn Muhle, Chains Interrupted volunteer, will counter the myths that human trafficking is rare, and that it happens "somewhere else." She'll describe how they partner with local hotels, hospitals, and schools to help us recognize the signs.

All monthly LWV programs are open to the public. Please forward this to like-minded friends, and make plans to join us April 8.

Light refreshments will be served.

1st Saturday of the Month Program, Topic: Heads-Up on Property Tax Reform in Iowa, over ZOOM

First-Saturday-of-the-Month Program
February 4, 2023 | 10:00 am |  Zoom

TOPIC:  Heads-Up on Property Tax Reform in Iowa

This is a great time to reinforce the direct connection between taxes paid and important services provided by local government. Our current Iowa Legislature is committed to Property Tax Reform, and it's critical for Iowans to understand what questions to ask about new legislation.

Our February speaker will provide an educational session on how taxes are levied, who pays them, and how they are used. While we all appreciate lower individual taxes, we have to be responsible. A practical balance is essential -- so that cities and counties can deliver the services that Iowa residents need and expect.

  • Speaker:  Dawn Jindrich, Linn County Finance Director will be on the front line in making budget adjustments to accommodate final decisions on tax reform. She will bring an informative presentation, share her perspective, and answer our questions.

All monthly LWV programs are open to the public. Please forward this to like-minded friends.
